Russia has released Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired American teacher, after he spent over a year in custody on charges related to fighting in Ukraine. His release aligns with ongoing peace negotiations, as U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

Hubbard was detained in occupied eastern Ukraine during Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. His family and the U.S. State Department have claimed that the charges against him were unfounded. Following a direct appeal from former President Donald Trump, Hubbard’s release was confirmed as Witkoff held talks with Putin aimed at advancing peace initiatives.

Witkoff expressed gratitude to Putin for facilitating Hubbard’s release, calling him a “humanitarian.” In a video shared with news outlets, Hubbard appeared healthy and managed to walk independently during his first meeting with Witkoff and Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport.

Trump commented on social media, asserting that the U.S. did not have to offer anything in return for Hubbard’s freedom. He stated that the situation was “unprecedented for Russia.” Trump claimed that had sanctions been in place, the negotiations for Hubbard’s release would have stalled.

Hubbard’s son expressed appreciation for the efforts made by Trump and U.S. officials, emphasizing their unwavering hope throughout the negotiations. “This humanitarian move by President Putin in this matter is deeply appreciated,” he said.

U.S. relations with Ukraine have faced challenges recently, with reports of limited intelligence sharing and delays in weapon supplies. Trump’s recent waiver of some sanctions on Russia has drawn bipartisan criticism, raising concerns about the U.S. commitment to Kyiv amidst ongoing tensions.

Witkoff informed Putin that groundwork had been laid for ending hostilities and presented documents outlining potential paths toward a peaceful resolution. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated openness to trilateral discussions involving Trump, though previous negotiations have seen little success.

Trump indicated the U.S. desires a swift resolution to the conflict, saying, “We want Zelenskyy to make a deal.” Meanwhile, attacks on Ukraine have continued, with at least nine civilians reported dead from recent Russian strikes.
