RS hails Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev

New Delhi, March 23 : The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday paid tributes to Indian independence revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev and observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the martyrs. As the House assembled, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu read out a message recalling the martyrdom of the legendary heroes. “These martyrs, who were still in their early 20s, laid down their lives, while putting up a strong fight against the oppressive colonial regime. They marched to the gallows with a smile on their faces shouting slogans against the British imperialism,” Naidu said. They not only strived to free the nation from colonialism but envisioned a just and ideal society devoid of communalism, hatred, economic disparity and retrogressive ideas, he added. “On this day, let us resolve to uphold the cherished values for which these martyrs lived and laid down their lives,” he said. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on this day in 1931 in the Lahore Central Jail. ASU MR
