RPF personal killed, ASI wounded in south Kashmir attack

Srinagar, April 18 : A Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel was killed and another was wounded in a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday evening, Police said. They said the attack on RPF took place outside Kakapora Railway Station at around 6:05 pm, in which Assistant Sub-Inspector Devraj Kumar and Head Constable Surinder Kumar were critically wounded. “In this terror crime incident, both the personnel received critical gunshot injuries and were immediately evacuated to hospital for treatment. However, Surinder Kumar succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom,” a police statement said. The whole area has been cordoned off with the help of reinforcement and search in the area is going on to trace the attackers. A purported CCTV footage shows the two RPF personnel sitting outside a tea stall at the Kakapora Railway Station and the lone attacker firing indiscriminately at the duo. After shooting, the attacker was seen running from the site. Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation. “Officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the terror crime,” added the statement. The attack on RPF personnel took place days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Modi is scheduled to arrive on April 24 in the on territory and is likely to address the Panchayat members in Samba district of Jammu. There has been a spurt in targeted attacks in Kashmir in the last few weeks. The attack on RPF has been condemned. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said the perpetrators of the barbaric act will not be spared. “Strongly condemn despicable terror attack on RPF personnel in Pulwama. I salute the bravery of HC Surinder Kumar, who attained martyrdom. The perpetrators of barbaric act will not be spared. Condolences to the grieving family & prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured,” a tweet by office of J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha read. The National Conference termed it a cowardly attack. “Unequivocally condemn the cowardly attack on Railway Police Force Personnel in Kakpora, Pulwama in which one of them lost his life, another is seriously injured. Condolences to the family of the deceased, thoughts with family. Prayers for the recovery of the injured RPF Personnel,” a tweet by the party read. MJR RJ
