Rohit Sharmas Recovery Progressing, Decision on CSK Match to be Made on Game Day: Jayawardene

Mumbai, May 1: Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene has announced that opener Rohit Sharma is gradually recovering from his hamstring injury. The franchise’s medical team will decide on Rohit’s inclusion in the team for the match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.

So far this season, Rohit Sharma has played only four matches. After missing the last four games due to his injury, the former captain was seen batting in the nets in Chennai on Friday.

In a press conference before the match against CSK, Jayawardene stated, “Rohit’s condition has improved significantly. He is working very hard to return to the field. For us, and the medical team, this is a daily routine. We assess how he feels and his physical condition the next day. Based on that, we will make a decision. We will also observe him during practice today. Let’s see how he feels tomorrow and what advice the medical team provides.”

The Mumbai Indians’ journey in IPL 2026 has not been particularly impressive. With only two wins out of eight matches, the five-time champions currently sit ninth on the points table. To stay in contention for the playoffs, MI must win every match from here on.

Jayawardene remarked, “This is not a time for experimentation for us. We have faced numerous challenges regarding injuries and player availability. I believe we have fielded 20 players this season, which we haven’t done in recent years. Typically, our maximum number has been 16. Even with the ‘Impact Player’ rule in effect, our limit has remained around 16 or 17 players. Given these circumstances, we have had to rely heavily on our bench strength.”

He added, “All these players are quite capable, especially our overseas players, who have proven to be excellent options for the team. Therefore, we have continuously adjusted the team combination based on the situation.”
