RJD Accuses Election Commission of Bias Towards BJP Amid Controversy

Patna, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Leaders from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have raised serious allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of straying from his duties and acting under the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shakti Singh Yadav, a prominent RJD figure, stated that the Election Commission, responsible for ensuring free and fair elections, has compromised its integrity.

Yadav pointed to claims made by a former chief secretary of Kerala, who alleged that Kumar had proposed ticket distribution for the BJP. This revelation raises concerns about Kumar’s involvement in the party’s electoral strategies.

The RJD leader also questioned the role of the Election Commission in the upcoming Bihar elections, noting that evidence related to these claims has been submitted to the Supreme Court. He highlighted that two election commissioners have expressed dissent against Kumar’s decisions on 14 occasions, emphasizing that all commissioners should be treated equally. Ignoring the opinions of fellow commissioners undermines democratic principles.

Yadav called for Kumar’s immediate resignation on ethical grounds and criticized new legislation that protects the Chief Election Commissioner from legal action after leaving office. He argued that if the Prime Minister and President can face consequences post-tenure, the same should apply to the Chief Election Commissioner. He insisted that accountability is essential to preserve constitutional institutions and democracy.

In a related development, Anil Deshmukh, a leader from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Nagpur, also condemned the Election Commission, labeling it a puppet of the BJP. He claimed that the Commission is currently engaged in a nationwide process of removing voters’ names, with approximately 130 million names deleted from voter lists, including over 2.6 million in Maharashtra alone.

Deshmukh expressed concern over the removal of names of individuals who had participated in previous elections, stating that this practice infringes on citizens’ constitutional rights. He presented three key demands: the central government should seek a prompt response from the Election Commission and remove the Chief Election Commissioner from office; an FIR should be filed against Gyanesh Kumar, leading to his imprisonment; and future elections should be conducted using ballot papers to ensure the integrity of democracy.
