Nagoya, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Indian swimmer Rishabh Das delivered an impressive performance at the Asian Games in Nagoya, securing his place in the men’s 100-meter backstroke final. He finished the heats with a time of 54.85 seconds, ranking fifth overall.
In Heat 3, Das claimed third place, ensuring his advancement to Monday’s final and keeping India’s hopes alive in this event. He trailed behind Japan’s Hidekazu Takehara by 0.63 seconds, while China’s Asian record holder, Zhu Jiayou, topped the heats with a time of 52.63 seconds.
Unfortunately, his compatriot Utkarsh Patil missed out on a final spot, finishing sixth in his heat with a time of 56.19 seconds, which placed him twelfth overall, making him a reserve.
In the men’s 100-meter freestyle heats, India’s performance was less favorable. Rohit Benedicton clocked in at 50.25 seconds, finishing fifth in Heat 5 and twelfth overall, which also left him as a reserve. Akash Mani followed closely behind, placing eighth in the same heat with a time of 50.85 seconds and failing to advance.
On a brighter note, the Indian women’s table tennis team kicked off their campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Indonesia. Shreeja Akula started strong, setting the pace for the team. Dhiya Chitale followed, defeating Almira Nebuchadnezzar with scores of 11-9, 11-8, and 11-5, extending India’s lead.
Yashaswini Ghorpade then secured the win, overcoming Chitra Rashmi with scores of 12-10, 11-4, and 11-4. India’s next match is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 PM against Singapore in Group F.
With Das now heading into the 100-meter backstroke final, Indian swimming has another opportunity to contend for a medal when the event resumes on Monday.
