Richa Chadha Questions the Casting of Commercial Actors in Indie Films

Mumbai, April 17: Actress and producer Richa Chadha is known for her candid views on various issues. Recently, she raised a significant question about why independent filmmakers consistently cast commercial actors. She argues that these actors neither attract audiences to the box office nor lend credibility to indie films at festivals.

In a statement, Richa said, “If an actor cannot bring an audience to your film on opening weekend or add weight at festivals, what is the benefit of casting them in an independent film?”

She clarified that she is not blaming anyone, but noted, “At least with trending actors, you have confidence that the quality of their performance will remain intact. Indie films also have commercial considerations; not every story needs big names to draw crowds. Hiring lesser-known actors can be more cost-effective while still giving the film credibility.”

Richa emphasized that without undermining any actor’s talent or importance, her point is that if indie films are to survive in 2026, it is essential to understand that audiences want to see good stories with capable actors who do not inflate budgets, as the costs of bringing in larger names also add up.

She stressed that the foundation of independent cinema has always been about taking risks, authenticity, and strong storytelling.

“The purpose of indie films is to bring forth new voices, actors, writers, and technicians who can add freshness and honesty to the film. When filmmakers compromise on casting due to the illusion of ‘commercial value,’ the film loses its soul,” she stated.

Richa also reflected on the golden era of indie cinema in the 1980s, mentioning iconic actors like Farooq Sheikh, Amol Palekar, and Shabana Azmi, who were stars in their own right. “Today, that space has completely vanished. If the entire industry waits for just five major male actors, who are already exhausted and busy, to carry your films, then I wish you ‘all the best’ because it simply means that film production will drastically decline.”
