Kolkata, April 17: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited West Bengal on Friday to campaign for the upcoming elections. During a press conference, he launched a fierce attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
Fadnavis stated, “There was a time when Kolkata and West Bengal were the economic, commercial, and industrial capitals of the country. The first major industries were established in Bengal. Even today, many successful entrepreneurs have their roots in Bengal.”
He emphasized that the current state of governance under Mamata Banerjee is worse than that of the CPI(M). “The economy of Bengal has undergone a significant transformation. Today, we can say that Mumbai and Maharashtra are the financial and commercial capitals of India. However, this status originally belonged to Kolkata and Bengal. Therefore, this election is not just about transferring power. If the situation in Bengal remains the same, I fear there will be no future for the upcoming generations,” he warned.
Fadnavis highlighted alarming statistics from September 2025, revealing that 6,895 industries have relocated from Bengal. Many entrepreneurs have established their businesses in Maharashtra. Recently, two entrepreneurs who had been operating in West Bengal for 50 years signed MOUs to invest in Maharashtra. Approximately 1,400 industries have moved from Bengal to Maharashtra, indicating a significant severance of ties.
He noted, “Around 65% of the population in the country is under 35 years old. Governments cannot provide jobs for such a large number of people; they can only create an environment for employment. Most job opportunities come from the private sector, while government enterprises have limited scope for employment.”
In a separate issue, female employees at the TCS office in Nashik have alleged that they were targeted based on religion and have also reported incidents of sexual harassment. Fadnavis described this as a serious matter, stating that a module was used to carry out these actions. “We will not spare anyone involved. TCS has adopted a similar stance. We will investigate this matter and have informed central agencies,” he added.
