Remembering Chandrashekhar Azad: Bollywood Films That Celebrate His Legacy

Mumbai, February 27: Today marks the martyrdom day of the great freedom fighter and revolutionary, Chandrashekhar Azad, born in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh.

Chandrashekhar Azad was known for his fearless spirit. In 1931, he stood alone against the British at Alfred Park in Allahabad, driven solely by his dedication to his country. On this anniversary of his sacrifice, we reflect on films inspired by his ideals and the courageous characters portrayed in Bollywood.

Numerous Hindi films have depicted the bravery of this legendary freedom fighter, but some performances by Bollywood actors have become particularly memorable. The first film inspired by Chandrashekhar Azad was “Shaheed,” released in 1965. Although it primarily focused on Bhagat Singh’s life, it also showcased Azad’s character in detail. Actor Manmohan’s portrayal remains unforgettable to this day.

Interestingly, actors Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol have both played characters inspired by Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad in their careers. In the 2002 film “23 March 1931: Shaheed,” Bobby portrayed Bhagat Singh, while Sunny took on the role of Chandrashekhar Azad. Both performances were well-received. Additionally, Sunny Deol’s film “Indian” was also inspired by Azad’s ideals, featuring a glimpse of him in the climax.

In the same year, “The Legend of Bhagat Singh” was released, where Akhilendra Mishra played the role of Chandrashekhar Azad. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film focused on Bhagat Singh’s life while also highlighting the contributions of Azad.

Aamir Khan’s name is also notable in this context. His 2006 film “Rang De Basanti” not only featured memorable songs but also told a story connected to the struggles of freedom fighters. In this film, Aamir portrayed a powerful character reminiscent of Chandrashekhar Azad. The film broke several box office records, grossing nearly 100 crores against a budget of 30 crores.

After extensive research spanning over a year and a half, the film “Hero of Nation Chandrashekhar Azad” was released in 2022. While it did not feature any major stars, it was well-received by audiences. Additionally, the film “Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad,” directed by Rajesh Mittal, was released in 2020, with Rishabh Raj in the lead role.
