New Delhi, April 9: The first phase of assembly elections held on Thursday in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry witnessed a remarkable voter turnout. The voting process was largely peaceful, with only minor incidents reported amid tight security.
According to available data, Puducherry recorded the highest turnout at 89.08%, followed by Assam at 85.04% and Kerala at 77.38%. However, the Election Commission is yet to release the final figures.
This year’s turnout surpasses that of 2021, when Puducherry saw 83.42%, Assam had 82.42%, and Kerala recorded nearly 76%.
Voting began at a moderate pace but picked up as the day progressed. Long queues were observed at several polling stations, and disabled voters participated enthusiastically.
In a notable moment, a newlywed couple arrived to vote right after their wedding in Kalamassery, Ernakulam district of Kerala, drawing attention. Additionally, a robot was seen welcoming voters at the VOC Government School in Puducherry, which quickly went viral on social media.
This phase included voting for 140 seats in Kerala, 126 in Assam, and 30 in Puducherry. By-elections were also conducted for some seats in Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura.
Polling took place from 7 AM to 5 PM, with early voters allowed to cast their ballots.
The Election Commission and state governments implemented extensive security measures, including the deployment of paramilitary forces and police. Special monitoring was conducted in sensitive areas to prevent booth capturing, intimidation, and illegal campaigning.
Heavy voting was observed in rural and tribal areas of Assam, while Kerala experienced disciplined and peaceful voting. Both urban and rural voters in Puducherry showed strong participation.
Political discussions centered around regional identity in Assam, development versus anti-incumbency in Kerala, and local issues in Puducherry.
All eyes are now on the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
