Jaipur, August 4: The Shri Rajput Karni Sena has called for strict action against police officers involved in a baton charge during a peaceful march on Monday. The organization claims that Devaraj Singh, a member of their group, died due to health complications that arose during the rally opposing new UGC regulations in Jaipur.
Mahipal Singh Makrana, president of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, stated that Devaraj Singh, a resident of Palada village in the Didwana-Kuchaman district, was participating in the protest supported by various organizations, including the National Hindu Assembly and other groups representing the upper caste community.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Makrana warned that if no action is taken against the officers who used batons and water cannons on the protesters, a shutdown of Jaipur will be called.
It is important to note that clashes occurred between the protesters and police during the rally. According to DCP (West) Prashant Kiran, Devaraj Singh’s death was not caused by police action. His health deteriorated suddenly during the protest, and he passed away while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Devaraj Singh’s last rites were performed in Jaipur on Tuesday morning. The police reported that he fell ill during the protest and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Initially, police attempted to halt the protest by setting up barricades under the 200-foot express flyover. However, protesters broke through the barricades and advanced towards the Collectorate Circle via Chaumu Pulia, Ambabadi, and Panipench Chauraha, leading to multiple confrontations with the police.
As the protesters continued to advance, police first used water cannons and then resorted to baton charges to disperse the crowd.
Some reports suggest that Devaraj Singh panicked during the chaos, fell, and sustained serious injuries. However, police maintain that his death was due to a sudden health crisis, not the baton charge or water cannon use.
The Shri Rajput Karni Sena has accused the police of using force against women and young protesters.
