New Delhi, April 29: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, shared a video of his visit to Great Nicobar Island on Wednesday, targeting the central government. He raised concerns about the government’s “Great Nicobar Island Development” project, stating that it represents destruction disguised as development.
In the video, Rahul Gandhi is seen walking through the forests of Great Nicobar Island. He posted on the social media platform ‘X’, “Today, I visited Great Nicobar. These are the most unique forests of my life. Trees older than our memories. Forests that took generations to grow. The people of this island, whether from indigenous communities or settlers, are equally beautiful, yet they are being stripped of their rights.”
He further stated, “What the government is doing here is labeled as a ‘project’. However, what I witnessed is not a project. It is the preparation to chop down millions of trees. This is a 160 square kilometer rainforest that has been left to perish. These are communities that have been overlooked while their homes are taken away. This is not development; it is destruction disguised as development.”
Rahul Gandhi also described the situation in Great Nicobar as one of the largest scams and one of the most serious crimes against the country’s natural and tribal heritage. He emphasized, “This must be stopped. And it can be stopped if Indians see what I have seen.”
Additionally, Rahul Gandhi visited the Sri Singh Sabha Gurudwara located in Campbell Bay on Great Nicobar Island, where he paid his respects and offered prayers. He also met several individuals in the gurudwara complex.
