Rahul Gandhi Urges President to Reconsider Appointment of Sikkim Governor Amid Ankita Bhandari Case
Rahul Gandhi has written to the President, requesting a review of the Sikkim Governors appointment related to the Ankita Bhandari murder case.

New Delhi, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has reached out to President Droupadi Murmu regarding the Ankita Bhandari murder case. He is urging her to reconsider the appointment of Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim.
In his letter, Gandhi highlighted that Ankita was just 19 years old when she was murdered on September 18, 2022. She worked as a receptionist at the Vanantara Resort near Rishikesh. Her employer, Pulkit Arya, the son of a BJP leader, allegedly pressured her to provide “special services” to VIP guests, which she refused. Pulkit Arya and two of his associates have since been sentenced to life in prison for her murder.
Gandhi pointed out that a crucial question remains unanswered: who were the VIPs involved? Following widespread protests in Uttarakhand earlier this year, the state government referred the matter to the CBI, but the investigation is still ongoing.
He expressed shock upon learning about Gautam’s appointment, noting that many, including Ankita’s family, accuse him of being connected to the crime. The CBI investigation is progressing slowly, raising concerns about accountability.
Gandhi reminded the President that the governor serves as the constitutional head of the state government, similar to the role of the President at the national level. While in office, no criminal proceedings can be initiated against them.
He stated, “Dushyant Gautam’s appointment effectively places him beyond the reach of the CBI. An investigation that may never lead to prosecution can only be superficial. A governor must earn the trust of their state’s citizens. No one can hold this position under such a shadow.”
Additionally, Gandhi acknowledged that governors are appointed based on the advice of the Prime Minister-led council of ministers. He criticized Prime Minister Modi for showing gross negligence towards women’s safety by recommending Gautam’s appointment. However, he noted that the President has the authority to advise the government, as per Article 74(1), and can request a reconsideration of such appointments.
In closing, Gandhi urged the President to intervene, asking her to request the government to reconsider Gautam’s appointment until the CBI investigation concludes. He emphasized that Ankita’s refusal to comply with abhorrent demands cost her life. Her parents, who continue to fight for justice, are opposing this appointment and facing police detention. He implored the President to take action to offer solace to Ankita’s grieving parents and uphold the integrity of the governor’s office.
