Mumbai, August 1: British actress Rachel Shelley, known for her role as Elizabeth Russell in Aamir Khan’s iconic film ‘Lagaan,’ has taken a trip down memory lane. She shared never-before-seen photos from the set of this Oscar-nominated classic, stirring nostalgia among fans.
On Friday, Rachel posted two special images from the film’s shoot on her social media account. One picture features her in traditional Indian attire adorned with colorful bangles, while the other shows her joyfully posing next to a beautifully decorated elephant in her distinctive Victorian-era costume.
In her post, she captioned, “Hey Lagaan lovers – did I ever share these pictures with you?”
In ‘Lagaan,’ Rachel portrayed the kind-hearted sister of the ruthless British officer Captain Andrew Russell, played by Paul Blackthorne. Unlike her brother, Elizabeth sympathizes with the villagers of Champaner and secretly teaches them cricket to challenge the British in a historic match.
As the story unfolds, Elizabeth gradually falls in love with Bhuvan, played by Aamir Khan. She later experiences heartbreak upon realizing Bhuvan’s deep affection for Gauri, portrayed by Gracy Singh.
Written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, ‘Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India’ was released on June 15, 2001. The film featured a stellar cast, including Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne, alongside Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Suhasini Mulay, Raghubir Yadav, Rajesh Vivek, Yashpal Sharma, Raj Zutshi, Akhilendra Mishra, and Dayashankar Pandey in pivotal roles.
The music for the film was composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. Earlier this June, the cast and crew reunited to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary with a special script-reading session.
