Punjab, UP, and MP Triumph in Sub-Junior Mens National Hockey Quarterfinals

Rajgir, April 9: On the eighth day of the 16th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men’s National Championship 2026, teams from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh secured victories in their respective Division ‘A’ quarterfinal matches.

In the first match of the day, held at the Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar, Dadra and Nagar Haveli faced Hockey Chandigarh, winning 2-1. Captain Dheeraj Pal scored both goals for the winning team at the 27th and 42nd minutes, while Jasmeet Singh netted a goal for Hockey Chandigarh in the 59th minute.

The second quarterfinal saw Hockey Punjab emerge victorious in a high-scoring clash against Hockey Jharkhand, winning 5-3. Rajveer Singh scored twice (29′, 56′), with Akash Deep (11′), Sahibzpreet Singh (32′), and Sanmukh Singh (39′) each contributing a goal. For Hockey Jharkhand, Ashish Tani Purti achieved a hat-trick with goals at the 15th, 19th, and 56th minutes.

In the third quarterfinal, Uttar Pradesh Hockey defeated the Hockey Association of Odisha 6-3. Nitish Yadav scored two goals (49′, 51′), while Karan Dhanush (33′), Prahlad Rajbhar (39′), captain Ketan Kushwaha (42′), and Romit Pal (52′) added to the scoreline. Deepak Prakash Toppo of the Hockey Association of Odisha also completed a hat-trick with goals at the 34th, 45th, and 57th minutes.

The final match of the day ended in a 0-0 draw between Hockey Madhya Pradesh and Hockey Haryana, with Madhya Pradesh winning 4-3 in the shootout. Karan Gautam, Ghazi Khan, Siddharth Ben, and Ronin Ningombam Singh scored for Madhya Pradesh, while goalkeeper Ayush Rajak made two crucial saves. Ashish, Sachin, and Vishwajit scored for Hockey Haryana in the shootout.

On the previous day of the championship, Hockey Chandigarh, Hockey Haryana, the Hockey Association of Odisha, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli also secured wins in their Division ‘A’ matches. In an exciting Pool A match, Hockey Chandigarh made a strong comeback to defeat Hockey Maharashtra 5-3, with Maharashtra’s Praveen Patiyal scoring first at the 21st minute, only for Chandigarh’s captain Sahil Duhan to equalize shortly after at the 27th minute.
