Bihar on High Alert as Gandak River Swells, Chief Minister Reviews Situation

The Bihar government is on alert as the Gandak Rivers rising water levels threaten floods in Gopalganj district.

Patna, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Rising water levels in the Gandak River have heightened flood risks in the low-lying areas of Gopalganj district, Bihar. Residents in coastal villages are evacuating their essential belongings, grain, and livestock to safer, elevated locations. The local administration has issued alerts in response to the situation.

Bihar’s Minister Ram Kripal Yadav expressed concerns about the increasing water levels affecting various regions. He noted that areas adjacent to the Gandak are already experiencing flooding, impacting multiple districts.

“The government is closely monitoring the situation,” Yadav stated. “The Water Resources Department is keeping a watchful eye. The Chief Minister is personally reviewing how to address the damage and provide relief to the affected people. The government is fully committed to tackling this issue.”

Janata Dal (United) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak also highlighted the dangerous conditions in the Gandak River, calling for long-term solutions.

Rajak pointed out that during a recent United Nations conference, the Prime Minister of Nepal noted that melting glaciers are contributing to the increased water flow into Bihar’s Terai region. “The water currently affecting the Gandak is coming from Nepal,” he remarked.

He advocated for a comprehensive program to address this persistent issue, emphasizing that the Janata Dal (United) and its MPs have raised the matter in Parliament multiple times. “The Indian government is taking this seriously, and discussions with the Nepalese government are ongoing,” he added.

Rajak expressed hope that these talks would lead to a concrete plan, which, while not completely eliminating the issues, would significantly reduce the annual water crisis faced by residents.
