New Delhi, May 5: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is set to meet President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday. The meeting will address the issue of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which Mann describes as “illegal” and “unconstitutional” defection.
In a statement to the media, Mann confirmed that he received acknowledgment from the President’s office. He stated, “We will raise the issue of illegal and unconstitutional defection by the seven Rajya Sabha MPs during our meeting with the President of India.”
Mann criticized the MPs, saying they have betrayed the mandate of the people and are not deserving of any sympathy, labeling them as traitors to Punjab and its people.
The seven Rajya Sabha MPs—Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Vikram Sahni, Swati Maliwal, and Rajinder Gupta—joined the BJP in April, delivering a significant blow to AAP, reducing its representation in the upper house from ten to just three.
Mann further emphasized, “Those who are normalizing this defection as a tradition are justifying a blatant disregard for the people’s decision. This is unacceptable, and those making such statements appear to be preparing to change their loyalties.”
Reaffirming the strength of the Punjab government, Mann stated that the government enjoys “full confidence both inside and outside the house, making any demand for a floor test unnecessary.”
He added, “The budget was passed smoothly, and every small or large bill has been successfully passed in the house, clearly indicating that the government holds a full majority.”
Targeting his critics, Mann remarked, “Those questioning the justification for calling an assembly session must first respond to the guarantees fulfilled by the central government before they can raise questions about us.”
