Punjab Assembly session set to elect new chief minister

Islamabad, April 3 : In the ensuing political drama in the country Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly is all set to vote on Sunday to elect the new leader of the house, even as the National Assembly in Islamabad decides on the no-confidence motion submitted against Prime Minister Imran Khan, Dawn reported. The main contest is between PML-Q’s PTI-backed Chaudhry Parvez Elahi and PML-N’s Hamza Shehbaz, who has the support of Jahangir Khan Tarin (JKT) group, the disgruntled group from the PTI who are in the race to become the next chief minister of the province. The Punjab Assembly session, which was adjourned on Saturday, is scheduled to resume at 11:30am PKT on Sunday, around the same time when the National Assembly session to vote on a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan will begin. In a surprise move earlier the federal government, removed Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar from his post just hours before the session of the provincial assembly was to commence. The chief minister’s post in the province fell vacant after the incumbent Usman Buzdar resigned as part of the deal between the PTI and the PML-Q for the latter’s support to Imran Khan in the NA against the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan. The Punjab government had de-notified CM Buzdar after the acceptance of his resignation but in the same notification allowed him “to continue to hold office until his successor enters upon the office”. In an array of notifications, the provincial government had also denotified all the 37 provincial ministers, five advisers to the chief minister and five special assistants to the chief minister. After the PTI decided to back Pervez Elahi of the PML-Q for the top post, the PML-N put forward the name of Hamza Shehbaz for the CM’s post after approval by party supremo Nawaz Sharif. In order to be elected as chief minister, a candidate will need to get at least 186 votes in the 371-member house. In the Punjab Assembly, the PTI has 183 lawmakers, PML-Q 10, PML-N 165, PPP seven, five are independent and one belongs to Rah-i-Haq. The decisive factor in Sunday’s vote is the support of Jahangir Tareen group, a bloc of around 16 disgruntled PTI lawmakers. ACL1200
