Pune Rape-Murder Case Sparks Political Outrage and Calls for SIT Investigation

Mumbai, May 4: The tragic case of a four-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Nasrapur, located in Pune district, has escalated from a law and order issue to a significant political controversy. Opposition parties have launched a fierce attack on Devendra Fadnavis, the state’s Home Minister. They claim that the negligence of the police and the deteriorating law and order situation have led to such heinous crimes. Additionally, they are demanding a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the matter.

Vijay Wadettiwar, leader of the Maharashtra Congress Legislative Party, has raised serious questions about the police’s handling of the case. He pointed out that the police were aware of the accused’s criminal history but failed to present this information in court.

He criticized the police for only amending their remand application after being reprimanded by the court. “If the police are this negligent, how can justice be served for the victim? Is their only achievement to beat the grieving family and the public?” he questioned.

Wadettiwar has called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a female IPS officer. He emphasized that the Pune police’s insensitivity has eroded public trust.

Meanwhile, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MP also launched a scathing attack on the government, holding Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis accountable. He remarked that Fadnavis is so engrossed in politics that the Home Department has spiraled out of control.

Raut sarcastically stated, “If ‘sister’ receives ₹1,500 a month but in return, their daughters are exploited, should they remain silent?”

Mumbai Congress President and MP Varsha Gaikwad condemned the incident as a stain on humanity. She asserted that fear of the law has dissipated in the state, and police accountability has weakened.

Amit Thackeray, a leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, expressed deep sorrow and anger over the incident. He noted that it is particularly tragic that the girl was merely visiting her grandmother when such a horrific event occurred. An elderly man allegedly raped and then murdered her.

Following the incident, there was significant public outrage, leading to protests in the area. Tensions escalated when police charged at the demonstrators and the victim’s family, who were demanding immediate justice. This incident further substantiated the opposition’s claims of government insensitivity.

Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the incident, labeling it a blot on humanity. He instructed the police to present a robust case and ensure that the guilty receive severe punishment. He also announced that the case would be fast-tracked in court, with the government aiming for the death penalty for the perpetrator.

In light of the incident, police patrols in the area have been increased to ensure public safety. The government has assured that the truth of the matter will be revealed soon.
