Protests Erupt in Patna Over Various Demands, Police Clash with Demonstrators

Protests in Patna lead to clashes with police as demonstrators demand changes in educational policies and governance.

Patna, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Demonstrations erupted in Patna on September 28, as various organizations and students took to the streets demanding action on multiple issues. Protesters marched from Gandhi Maidan to the Dak Bungalow intersection, where tensions escalated after police attempted to halt their progress. In response to the growing unrest, law enforcement deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd, leading to confrontations that resulted in the detention of several male and female protesters.

The protests were primarily organized by leftist groups calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, among other demands. After leaving Gandhi Maidan, the demonstrators faced police resistance near JP Golambar, but they continued their march toward Dak Bungalow. A significant police presence was established at the intersection to manage the situation.

Medical and nursing students also joined the protests, marching from Gandhi Maidan toward the Chief Minister‘s residence to voice their concerns. Pappu Yadav, a Member of Parliament from Purnea, participated in the demonstration, walking alongside students from Gate Number 10 of Gandhi Maidan. He criticized the Bihar government for being anti-student and claimed it was jeopardizing their futures.

Yadav called for the appointment of a permanent vice-chancellor at the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS) to ensure the smooth operation of academic and administrative functions. He also demanded a system for re-evaluating exam papers and timely implementation of the academic calendar, which he argued would facilitate the scheduling of exams and other educational activities. Furthermore, he advocated for stipends for students associated with BUHS, warning that if the government failed to address their concerns, they would escalate their protests across villages.

As tensions rose at Dak Bungalow, police resorted to using water cannons, while some protesters were seen dancing amid the chaos. However, the situation intensified, prompting police to take further action to clear the area, resulting in multiple detentions. The protests disrupted traffic around Gandhi Maidan, JP Golambar, and Dak Bungalow, creating significant delays and confusion in the vicinity.
