Protests Erupt in Jammu and Kashmir Following Death of Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei

Srinagar, March 1: Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei amid conflict with Israel, protests have erupted in Jammu and Kashmir. Large-scale demonstrations took place on Sunday, leading to the postponement of examinations in the region.

The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) announced on Sunday that the OMR-based written examination for the position of Laboratory Attendant in the Home Department was scheduled for that day.

The notification stated, “All concerned candidates are informed that the OMR-based written examination for the Laboratory Attendant (Home Department) position, as per the advertisement issued on July 22, 2025, has been postponed. The new date for the examination will be announced separately.”

However, the JKSSB did not provide a reason for the postponement in their notification.

Notably, protests occurred in Srinagar in response to Khamenei’s death. A significant number of Kashmiri Shia Muslims gathered and marched to Lal Chowk in Srinagar to express their dissent.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concerns over the escalating conflict in the Middle East and urged people to maintain peace. The Chief Minister’s office posted on social media platform ‘X’, stating, “The Chief Minister (Omar Abdullah) has expressed deep concern regarding the events in Iran, including the news of the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He has appealed to all communities to maintain peace, exercise restraint, and avoid any actions that could lead to tension or unrest.”

The post further mentioned, “The Jammu and Kashmir government is working with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of Jammu and Kashmir residents currently in Iran, including students.”

Meanwhile, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti commented on Khamenei’s death, stating, “Today marks a tragic and shameful turn in history, as Israel and the United States boast about the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

She continued, “It is shameful and shocking that Muslim countries have shown clear and indirect support, opting for convenience and immediate gains over listening to the voice of conscience.” Mehbooba Mufti added, “History will bear witness to who fought for justice and who aided the oppressors. Our prayers are with the people of Iran.”
