Kolkata, August 11: Protests broke out on Tuesday at a hospital in Malda district following the death of an eight-year-old girl, allegedly due to medical negligence.
The girl, who had been suffering from fever for two days, was brought to the hospital when her condition worsened. Her family claims that Dr. Soumen Saha, who was on duty, referred her to Malda Medical College and Hospital without providing adequate treatment.
Tragically, the girl passed away while being transported to the medical college. This prompted her family to accuse the doctor of negligence, leading to protests at the hospital.
During the protests, family members confronted doctors, the assistant superintendent, and hospital officials. The situation escalated, prompting police intervention to restore order.
Pradeep Das, the deceased minor’s uncle, alleged that the girl was referred without proper treatment. He further claimed that when the family attempted to file a complaint, the on-duty doctor mistreated them. A written complaint against the doctor has been lodged.
Dr. Saha denied the allegations, stating to local reporters that the claims of negligence are “completely false.” He shifted the responsibility to the hospital administration.
This incident has reignited concerns about the quality of services in government hospitals and the role of doctors. Families of other patients admitted to the hospital have called for improved medical care, especially following the change in government in the state.
