Protest in Malegaon Against Chief Election Commissioner Amid Tension with Police

A protest march in Malegaon against the Chief Election Commissioner faced police barricades, raising concerns about electoral integrity.

Malegaon, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : A significant protest unfolded in Malegaon, Maharashtra, on October 16, organized by the “Save the Constitution Committee” against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The march, which began near the statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, aimed to reach the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. However, police intervened at Sangameshwar Corner, setting up barricades to halt the procession. Despite the police presence, there were no reports of any untoward incidents.

Mustaqeem Dignity, the youth president of the Maharashtra Socialist Party, stated that the march was intended to voice dissent against the Chief Election Commissioner. He emphasized that the movement was not against the police or the government, but rather focused on the integrity of the Election Commission, which is expected to remain impartial.

Dignity expressed concern over the public’s diminishing trust in the Chief Election Commissioner, suggesting that if confidence erodes, resignation should be considered. This sentiment has been communicated to President Droupadi Murmu.

He highlighted that voters rely on the democratic system and the electoral process when casting their votes. The trust in the Election Commissioner is crucial; while judgments on right and wrong can be made later, maintaining public trust should take precedence over holding office.

During the protest, Dignity criticized the police’s actions, alleging they were deployed to suppress the demonstration. He noted that despite the event being scheduled near the Ambedkar statue, a significant police presence prevented many from attending. He claimed that similar marches were planned across the country but faced suppression in various regions, including Maharashtra.

The protesters expressed their dissent by climbing the barricades set up by the police, ultimately concluding the demonstration. Dignity reiterated that the committee is committed to protecting the Constitution and advocating for the freedoms associated with Mahatma Gandhi’s principles. The aim of the march was to raise awareness about democratic values and public confidence in the Election Commission.
