New Delhi, May 1: On International Workers’ Day, there is a renewed emphasis on the rights and health of laborers. With soaring temperatures and heatwaves affecting many regions, it is crucial to prioritize safety for workers.
The hard work of laborers drives the nation forward, making their health protection a significant responsibility. Workers’ Day serves as a reminder that every laborer deserves to work in a safe and healthy environment. During this hot season, those working outdoors, including construction workers, farmers, and roadside laborers, are particularly vulnerable.
According to the National Health Mission, failure to protect against heat and heatwaves can severely impact workers’ health. Essential precautions must be taken to avoid heat-related illnesses. Workers should stay in the shade whenever possible. If working in direct sunlight is unavoidable, it is vital to cover the head with a hat, scarf, or cloth. Staying hydrated is crucial; workers should drink water regularly, taking small sips before feeling thirsty.
Additionally, it is advisable to avoid sugary cold drinks, sodas, and energy drinks, as these can lead to rapid dehydration. Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing can help absorb sweat and keep the body cool. Workers should not remain in direct sunlight for extended periods and should take breaks of 10-15 minutes every 45-60 minutes. Eating light and easily digestible meals is also recommended, as heavy, fried, or spicy foods can increase body heat.
Experts warn that symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, vomiting, high fever, and fainting. In such cases, it is essential to move the affected person to a shaded area and cool their body with cold water while seeking medical assistance. Industry organizations and trade unions must ensure reasonable working hours during the hot season, provide shade and drinking water, and raise awareness among workers.
