New Delhi, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : President Droupadi Murmu extended her heartfelt congratulations to the Indian women’s hockey team for clinching the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026. This victory is particularly significant as it also secured the team’s direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Indian team triumphed over reigning champions China with a narrow 1-0 victory at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan. This win marks the first gold medal for India in women’s hockey at the Asian Games since 1982, ending a 44-year wait for the continental title.

In a post on her social media platform, X, President Murmu expressed her pride: “Congratulations to the Indian women’s hockey team for their spectacular gold medal win at the Asian Games. Your determination, skill, and passionate play have brought the gold medal back to India, filling the nation with immense pride and joy. This victory is even more special with the direct qualification for the 2028 Olympics.”

She also highlighted the team’s impact on young athletes, stating, “You are an inspiration to countless young girls across the country. Best wishes for your future endeavors.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised the team’s achievement, writing on X, “The girls have made history by winning gold. Our women’s hockey team has etched a glorious moment in history at the Asian Games. They showcased dominance and skill on the field, bringing this proud moment to our nation. Congratulations to our champions.”

The historic win was secured with a goal from Lalremsiami in the 10th minute, who executed a brilliant reverse hit following a well-coordinated move with teammates Salima Tete and Sakshi. The Indian defense showcased strong performance to maintain their slim lead, with veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia making a crucial save on a penalty stroke to deny China an equalizer.

Prior to the final, India topped Pool A by winning all four matches and defeated Japan 7-2 in the semifinals. With this gold medal, the team has not only made history but also ensured their place in the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics, marking only the second gold medal for India in women’s hockey at the Asian Games, the first being in New Delhi in 1982.
