New Delhi, March 25 : The Supreme Court on Friday allowed former tech promoter Sanjay Chandra’s wife Preeti, lodged in Tihar Jail for money laundering, to attend her grandmother’s funeral for a day between 10 am and 3 pm and directed that she will be escorted by the police. A Bench headed by Justice Dr D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justice M R Shah passed the order. The Supreme Court asked Preeti Chandra to submit her Dominican Republic passport or any other passport that she has to the investigating officer before being allowed out of prison. The Supreme Court also directed Preeti Chandra not to use a phone or any comm cation device when she is out of the jail. The court was hearing Preeti Chandra’s plea seeking to attend the last rites of her grandmother. In the last hearing, the Enforcement Directorate had told the court that Preeti had recently got citizenship of the Dominican Republic and India did not have an extradition treaty with that country. The ED opposed her bail plea and said that it was better to be safe than sorry. Additional Solicitor General Madhavi Divan, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, said Preeti Chandra was arrested when she was trying to leave the country. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate filed a prosecution complaint in a sessions court in Delhi against the founder of tech Group Ramesh Chandra, Preeti Chandra (Sanjay Chandra’s wife) and Rajesh Malik of Carnoustie Group under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The ED accused tech Group of allegedly transferring Rs 347 crores to the Carnoustie Group, which bought immovable and movable assets in NCR, across India and abroad. SM MR
