Chennai, April 2: The election process for the Tamil Nadu Assembly has gained momentum as Porkodi Armstrong, leader of the Tamil Manila Bahujan Samaj Kachi, filed her nomination for the Tiruvika Nagar (Scheduled Caste) seat in Chennai on Thursday.
Porkodi Armstrong is contesting as a candidate for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the AIADMK, and will run under the ‘two leaves’ election symbol.
With the deadline for nominations set for April 6, political activities have intensified, and major candidates are actively entering the fray.
Porkodi’s candidacy has drawn significant attention due to her personal and political background. She is the wife of the late K. Armstrong, a prominent leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Tamil Nadu, who was murdered in 2024. The case remains under investigation.
The murder of the BSP state president sparked widespread outrage and ignited debates about political violence and caste equations in the state.
Porkodi stated that her entry into the electoral arena is not just about politics but also about carrying forward her husband’s legacy and fighting for justice.
Following K. Armstrong’s death, Porkodi was appointed as a coordinator within the party but was later removed due to internal disagreements. Subsequently, on July 5, the first anniversary of her husband’s death, she founded her new party, the Tamil Manila Bahujan Samaj Kachi.
The Tiruvika Nagar seat is considered strategically important for Porkodi, as it includes areas like Perambur, where her husband had a strong support base. Political analysts believe this local connection could influence election outcomes.
Her candidacy has also received support from various factions. VCK leader Thirumavalavan and filmmaker Pa. Ranjith welcomed her decision to contest and expressed concerns for her safety, urging the administration to provide adequate security during her campaign.
Additionally, several Dalit organizations have backed Porkodi, emphasizing the significance of her candidacy in the broader context of representation and justice.
