Political Turmoil in Maharashtra: Sunil Tatkare Meets Sharad Pawar Amidst Party Division

Mumbai, May 13: In the midst of ongoing political upheaval within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP Ajit Pawar faction), party MP Sunil Tatkare met with NCP President Sharad Pawar at his residence, Silver Oak, on Tuesday evening. This marked the first meeting between the two leaders since the party’s split in July 2023.

Recently, Sunil Tatkare was appointed as the leader of the NCP in the Lok Sabha by party president Sunetra Pawar, who has formed a new national working committee.

Tatkare clarified that the meeting was not political in nature. Its sole purpose was to inquire about the health of the senior leader, who has been unwell for several days. He had requested the meeting due to Sharad Pawar’s recent health issues. No political discussions took place during the meeting, nor was there any dialogue regarding Sunetra Pawar’s recent post about the national executive or the party division. Tatkare reiterated that work would continue under Sunetra Pawar’s leadership.

The timing of this meeting has stirred political circles. It occurred when an official letter sent to the Election Commission regarding national positions notably omitted the names of Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel.

The meeting at Sharad Pawar’s Mumbai residence followed a recent joint trip to Assam by Sunetra Pawar, Parth Pawar, Praful Patel, and Sunil Tatkare, which was seen as an attempt to showcase party unity.

Tatkare’s visit to Silver Oak is symbolic, given the party’s division into two factions. Concerns had already been raised regarding the absence of senior leaders like Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal, Sunil Tatkare, and Dilip Walse Patil from the executive list dated April 29.

In the newly formed national executive, Sunetra Pawar has been appointed as the national president, her elder son, Rajya Sabha MP Parth Pawar, as the national general secretary, and her younger son, Jai Pawar, as the national secretary.

The absence of former national general secretary Sunil Tatkare and trusted veteran leader Praful Patel has sparked speculation about internal reshuffles or significant strategic reorganizations.

As the list went viral on social media, Sunetra Pawar took immediate steps to quell the controversy. In a post on X, she clarified that the discrepancies were not intentional and that a technical error had occurred in the circulated list of NCP officials. This will be rectified soon.
