New Delhi, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, a recent incident involving Delhi government minister Pravesh Verma has sparked significant political controversy. Verma slapped a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), prompting the party to call for a police complaint against him.
AAP leaders allege that when they approached police officials to file the complaint, they were detained and mistreated. Verma, expressing regret over the incident, claimed that AAP supporters obstructed government work and made offensive remarks about his family.
AAP legislator Kuldeep Kumar criticized the Delhi police’s actions on the social media platform X, stating that police assaulted protesters demanding action against Verma. He reiterated the call for an FIR to be filed against the minister.
Another AAP leader, Saurabh Bhardwaj, pointed out that despite the slap being captured on video, no FIR had been registered against Verma. He questioned the police’s inaction, especially since the incident occurred in the presence of law enforcement officers.
The AAP’s official account on X reacted to the situation, asserting that the incident involved a young man who raised concerns about the quality of road construction in the Vikas Puri area. Following this, Bhardwaj and other party workers were reportedly detained by Delhi police while seeking to file a complaint.
The AAP also accused the police of misconduct towards female workers, although the Delhi police has not responded to these allegations.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh launched a sharp critique of the BJP government, stating that during the AAP’s decade in power, ministers were responsive to public issues. He condemned the physical altercation with the young man who questioned the quality of road construction and suggested that if there were complaints, the minister should have sought an investigation.
Singh referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public conduct and communication, questioning the BJP leadership and suggesting that such lessons should first be imparted to their ministers.
As the controversy grew, Minister Pravesh Verma took to social media to express his regret over the incident. He emphasized the need to understand the full context of what transpired but acknowledged that the incident should not have occurred.
Verma accused AAP affiliates of deliberately damaging the under-construction road to mislead the public regarding its quality. He also claimed that the contractor involved had been extorted for bribes, leading to a police complaint.
According to Verma, the Public Works Department will conduct a quality audit and investigation regarding the road construction. He warned against obstruction of government operations, damage to public property, or undue pressure on officials and contractors.
