Mumbai, April 9: The Baramati Assembly by-election has taken a significant turn in Maharashtra’s political landscape. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has personally initiated discussions with the opposition, intensifying the buzz surrounding this election. With the deadline for withdrawing nominations approaching on Thursday, all eyes are on whether the election will proceed or if Sunetra Pawar will secure victory unopposed.
According to sources, CM Fadnavis directly contacted Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal. During their conversation, he urged Congress to withdraw its candidate to facilitate an uncontested election for Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, who is the candidate from the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction).
This move is considered quite surprising in state politics. It is rare for a prominent leader from the ruling party to reach out to the opposition’s state president to request the withdrawal of a candidate.
Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar has also discussed the matter with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. He stated that Congress, being a national party, should make its own decision. However, if asked for advice, he would suggest that the election be held without competition. He emphasized that this seat became vacant following the death of an experienced leader, and it should be treated with respect.
This by-election is taking place after the demise of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Consequently, many leaders and parties are advocating for a respectful, uncontested election to honor his legacy.
Earlier, Sunetra Pawar and other NCP leaders had met with CM Fadnavis in a crucial meeting. During this discussion, the Chief Minister assured that the entire coalition stands united.
On the other hand, Congress had initially been firm on contesting this seat, but their stance appears to be shifting. Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar has hinted that the party may withdraw its candidate. However, the final decision will depend on approval from the high command.
