Srinagar, August 17: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) launched a sharp attack on former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday regarding her ‘mental naxal‘ remark. The party accused her People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of being responsible for the political events that ultimately led to the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
The National Conference claimed that if the PDP had not allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the removal of Article 370 would not have occurred in 2019. This statement came after Mehbooba Mufti expressed that she considers herself a ‘mental naxal’ for her continued support of Article 370 and opposition to its abrogation.
Speaking to the media, JKNC’s chief spokesperson Tanveer Sadiq reminded everyone that the party had warned against including the BJP in the government, citing the BJP’s declared stance on Article 370.
Sadiq questioned Mehbooba Mufti’s comments, stating, “It seems very odd for a chief minister or former chief minister to make such a statement for which she is herself responsible.” He recalled that after the 2014 election results, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had stated, “We will support you unconditionally; do not bring in the BJP because their manifesto talks about removing Article 370.”
According to Sadiq, despite the warning, the PDP formed a coalition government with the BJP after the 2014 assembly elections.
He further asserted that everyone knows that the events of 2019 occurred due to that coalition. “If they had not allied with the BJP, the 2019 incident would never have happened. These are just feigned tears. Mehbooba Mufti is primarily responsible for the events of 2019,” he stated.
The political controversy surrounding the term ‘mental naxal’ was ignited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech, where he warned that despite significant progress in tackling armed naxalism, a more subtle form of this ideology remains a challenge for the country.
