New Delhi, February 22: Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s discussion on organ donation during the ‘Mann Ki Baat‘ program is a noble and inspiring initiative. This effort aims to enhance awareness and public participation across the nation.
In an interview following the 131st episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat‘, Dr. Kumar highlighted how the Prime Minister shared real-life success stories of transplants, sending a powerful message to society. He specifically mentioned a 10-month-old girl from Kerala whose parents decided to donate her organs, saving four lives.
Such emotional and inspiring examples help dispel the myths and social hesitations surrounding organ donation. They assist in conveying that organ donation is an act of compassion and humanity that can give new life to many.
Dr. Kumar also shared the story of a woman from Delhi who underwent a heart transplant. Previously unable to walk even a step, she has since resumed a normal life, traveling to Kedarnath and Neelkanth, and now fulfills her family responsibilities.
Similarly, a young man who received a heart-lung transplant, previously dependent on oxygen, has successfully trekked to Nathu La Pass at an altitude of 14,000 feet twice since his surgery.
Dr. Kumar emphasized that transplants can enable individuals to lead healthy lives and actively participate in their families and communities. He posed a thought-provoking question: why not donate our organs after death to save someone else’s life instead of cremating or burying them?

NOTTO operates at the national level, supported by five regional organizations and state-level entities across the country. Collaborating with hospitals and various NGOs, this extensive network works to raise awareness about organ donation.
He pointed out that while the demand for organs in the country is high, the number of donations remains low. To bridge this gap, collective efforts from the government, organizations, and society are essential.
A single individual can save up to eight lives through organ donation after death. Vital organs such as two kidneys, a liver, a heart, two lungs, a pancreas, and intestines can provide new life to different patients. Additionally, donating corneas, skin, bones, and other tissues can significantly improve the quality of life for many.
