New Delhi, April 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the remarkable achievements of Indian girls during the recent Math Olympiad held in France, in the 133rd episode of his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program on Sunday. He highlighted that the girls showcased exceptional talent and intelligence in this prestigious international competition.
PM Modi stated, “You are among the most talented individuals in the world. You faced challenging math problems with only four and a quarter hours to solve them. The competition is intense and at an international level. It is natural to feel nervous in such situations, yet our daughters excelled.” The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad took place earlier this month in Bordeaux, France, marking a significant event for schoolgirls interested in mathematics. It is one of the most esteemed competitions globally.
He added, “Our daughters delivered their best performance in this Olympiad. I am very proud of this talented team, which included Shreya Mundra from Mumbai, Sanjana Chacko from Thiruvananthapuram, Shivani Bharat Kumar from Chennai, and Shrimoi Bera from Kolkata. Our team secured the sixth position in the world, with Shreya making history by winning a gold medal, while Sanjana earned silver and Shivani took home bronze.”
The Prime Minister explained that the selection process for participation in the Olympiad in India is quite rigorous. It involves multiple rounds at regional, state, and then national levels. Students must overcome tough challenges, after which the best performers join a month-long math camp. This camp is organized at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, funded by the Tata Institute. A test is conducted at the end of the camp, and based on performance, the Indian team is selected.
PM Modi noted that approximately 600,000 girls participate in this Math Olympiad program each year, with this number steadily increasing over time. The culture of the Olympiad is rapidly gaining popularity among the country’s daughters. He commended the parents for their support of these girls.
