
New Delhi, August 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Indian athletes who excelled at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Sunday, congratulating them on their remarkable performances. The meeting took place at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister engaged the medalists in discussions about their experiences during the games.
Sharing photos from the meeting on social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his joy, stating, “It was a pleasure to host our outstanding medalists from the Commonwealth Games 2026. I listened to their experiences in sports. These athletes have brought glory to our nation with their exceptional performances, and their success will inspire many youths.”
Earlier, on Instagram, the Prime Minister encouraged the athletes, saying, “Those who play will bloom. Always boost India’s spirit. Jai Hind!”
PM Modi particularly congratulated athletes who achieved historic feats in boxing, judo, athletics, and para-athletics. India secured a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, finishing fourth in the medal tally at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.
This achievement is noteworthy as several medal-winning sports, such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and shooting, were not included in this edition of the games.
The Indian boxing team had a stellar performance, winning 7 gold and 3 silver medals. Gold medalists included Preeti Pawar (54 kg), Jasmine Lamboria (57 kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51 kg), Priya Ghanghas (60 kg), Arundhati Chaudhary (70 kg), Sachin Siwach (60 kg), and Ankush Panghal (80 kg). Meanwhile, Jadumani Singh, Lovlina Borgohain, and Narendra Berwal secured silver medals.
Sakshi Chaudhary, a gold medal-winning boxer, described her meeting with the Prime Minister as memorable, stating it was a moment of pride for all athletes. She noted that the Prime Minister was very humble, and all the players were thrilled to meet him. The Indian judo team also performed exceptionally well at the Commonwealth Games, winning two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal from 12 judo events.
Asmita Devi and Harsh Singh made history by winning India’s first-ever gold medals in judo. Asmita became the first Indian woman judoka to win gold at the Commonwealth Games, while Harsh Singh achieved the same milestone as the first Indian male judoka. The Indian athletics team won a total of 10 medals, including 5 silver and 5 bronze.
Athlete Gulveer Singh made history by becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals in a single Commonwealth Games, securing silver in the men’s 10,000 meters and bronze in the 5,000 meters.
PM Modi emphasized that the athletes’ achievements will inspire the youth of the country to pursue sports and will give India a new identity on the global sports stage.
