Pickup Truck Plunges into 15-Foot Ravine in Chhattisgarh, Injuring Ten

Raipur, March 29: A pickup truck carrying a catering team plunged into a deep ravine in the Kabirdham district of Chhattisgarh, injuring at least ten people, including the driver.

Among the injured, four individuals are reported to be in critical condition and have been referred to the district hospital in Kawardha for advanced treatment. The vehicle was traveling from Lohara towards the Rengakhar forest area on Saturday evening, transporting catering staff who were en route to prepare food for a wedding ceremony.

As the pickup truck navigated the treacherous curves of the Dhani Khuta gorge, the driver lost control. The vehicle skidded off the narrow road and fell approximately 15 feet into the ravine, causing chaos at the scene.

The Dhani Khuta gorge is notorious for its hilly terrain, steep slopes, narrow roads, and dangerous turns, making it a high-risk area for road accidents.

Local residents and passersby promptly initiated a rescue operation, managing to pull all the injured individuals from the ravine. The emergency team from ‘Dial 112’ arrived shortly after and assisted in transporting the injured to the hospital. Initially, they were taken to the community health center in Sahaspur Lohara, where they received first aid.

Following initial assessments and treatment, doctors referred four critically injured individuals, including the driver, to the district hospital in Kawardha. The remaining six injured are also under medical supervision.

This incident has once again highlighted the poor state of road safety in this gorge section. Locals have long been advocating for proper crash barriers, warning signs, speed bumps, and road widening to prevent such incidents. The challenging geography and high-speed driving on this route have led to numerous accidents in the past.

The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident. Preliminary inquiries suggest that factors such as speeding, vehicle malfunction, or driver fatigue may have contributed, although official confirmation is still pending.
