Washington, May 2: The Pentagon is planning to withdraw approximately 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, according to a senior defense official.
An unnamed official revealed to U.S. media that recent comments made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz were deemed “inappropriate and unhelpful.” Earlier this week, Merz criticized the U.S. military engagement with Iran, labeling it as “unplanned” and suggesting that the U.S. is being “humiliated” by Iranian leadership.
In response to Merz’s statements, President Donald Trump criticized him, asserting that Merz lacks understanding of the situation and is not serious about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump indicated on social media that the U.S. is considering reducing its military presence in Germany, with a decision expected soon. He also hinted at a potential decrease in the number of U.S. troops stationed in Spain and Italy.
Targeting European allies, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with their lack of support in the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. He stated that he might also reduce the military presence in Spain and Italy, questioning, “Why shouldn’t I? Italy has not helped at all. Spain’s behavior has been very poor.”
Meanwhile, Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the country is prepared for a possible reduction of U.S. troops. Trump has been vocal about his frustration with European allies who have not supported the U.S. in its efforts against Iran, frequently expressing his anger through Truth Social. He mentioned on Wednesday that he is contemplating withdrawing troops from European nations that did not stand by the U.S. in times of need.
As of the end of last year, over 36,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Germany, along with approximately 1,500 reserve soldiers and 11,500 civilian employees. Germany hosts the headquarters of U.S. European and African Command, and Ramstein Air Base serves as a critical hub for U.S. military operations.
