Pakistan: Plea filed in SC seeking probe into ‘threat letter’ to PM

Islamabad, March 30 : The issue of a “threat letter” which Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had claimed carried evidence of “foreign powers” being behind the opposition’s no-confidence move to oust his government and shared with senior journalists has now landed in the country’s Supreme Court, Express Tribune reported on Wednesday. The petition was filed by Advocate Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta in the top court seeking an inquiry into the letter stating that it was an extraordinary situation, which could cause a break down of the law and order situation in the country by creating hatred against friendly countries. It named Federation of Pakistan through the Law and Justice Division secretary as the respondent. The petitioner asked the court that it issue directions to the respondent to hand over the letter to the concerned civil and military authorities to investigate the matter. During his March 27 power show, PM Imran had pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and waved it at the crowd, claiming that it was evidence that there was a global conspiracy to oust his government, claiming that that external elements were using local politicians and money to “mend the country’s foreign policy” without specifying any person or country. He had further claimed that foreign elements were involved in changing regimes in Pakistan in the past but that the time had changed now. ACL2201
