Over 3,300 Lives Lost in Early Weeks of Iran Conflict, WHO Reports 4.3 Million Displaced

Geneva, April 4: Tensions in the Middle East have reached a critical point. On February 28, a joint airstrike by the United States and Israel targeted major cities in Iran. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles. Amid the bombardment, lives of children and the elderly are being lost, including health workers. The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to release alarming statistics that reflect the dire situation.

According to the WHO, approximately 3,300 people have fallen victim to the aerial bombardments in the early weeks of the conflict, with over 4.3 million people displaced.

This harrowing reality was highlighted by Hanan Balkhi, the WHO’s Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, as she assessed the impact of the Iran conflict’s initial weeks.

In a media briefing, Balkhi stated that the fighting has resulted in one of the “largest crises” in recent decades, with devastating consequences. Over 3,300 lives have been lost, more than 30,000 people injured, and over 4.3 million displaced. Additionally, there have been 116 attacks on health facilities during this period. Critical infrastructure, emergency services, and industrial units have also been targeted.

She emphasized that the situation emerging in the Middle East is extremely distressing. This is the region’s most significant tragedy in recent decades. According to her, the healthcare system is in complete disarray. Refugee camps are overcrowded, and the current conditions are detrimental to the environment. People are facing risks from biological, nuclear, and radioactive exposure, creating a crisis for the entire region.

Balkhi called for all parties to exercise restraint and urged for a ceasefire. She also demanded guarantees for the safety of health workers and health facilities operating in these areas.
