Out of 5,050 foreign companies registered in India, 66 pc are active: Govt data

New Delhi, April 13 : Nearly 66% or 3,335 out of the total 5,050 foreign companies registered in India are active, data from Corporate Affairs Ministry shows. As per Companies Act, a foreign company is defined as any company or body corporate incorporated outside India which has a place of business in India and conducts any business activity in India. As per section 380(1) of the Act, every foreign company shall within 30 days of the establishment of its place of business in India, deliver to the Registrar of Companies (ROC) necessary documents for registration. As per official data, Delhi has the highest number of foreign companies. Out of the total 1,957 companies registered in the city-state, as many as 1,444 are active. Maharashtra follows Delhi with the total number of foreign companies registered in the state standing at 1,346. Out of these, 815 are active. In the state of Karnataka, there are 462 foreign companies out of which 252 are active. In Haryana, the number of foreign companies is 450 out of which 248 are active. In the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, out of 108 registered foreign companies, 78 are active. In West Bengal, 59 foreign companies are active out of 89 registered in the state. In the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, now a on Territory, there is just one foreign company registered and it is not active. In the coastal state of Gujarat, there are 78 foreign companies of which 52 are active. In Tamil Nadu, 335 foreign companies are registered and 217 of them are active. In what shows the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, the number of companies registered during 2020-21 fell to 78 from 124 in 2019-20 and 118 in 2018-19. NK
