Kolkata, Mar 25 : West Bengal’s opposition parties on Friday welcomed the Calcutta High Court order for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the carnage in Bogtui village of Birbhum district, where eight people were burnt alive by a mob earlier this week. The gruesome incident happened hours after a Trinamool Congress leader was bombed to death by dentified killers on Monday evening. Advocate and BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal, who appeared as one of the petitioners before the court seeking a fair investigation, said: ‘The court (HC) has accepted the demand for an impartial probe. After hearing both sides, the court has ordered a CBI probe into the incident. The court has felt that there is a need to provide justice to the people.” The HC’s division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj during the day observed that “in the interest of justice and to instill confidence in the society and to have a fair investigation to dig out the truth it is necessary to” hand over the investigation to the CBI. The Bench also directed the state constituted SIT (Special Investigation Team) to not carry out any further investigation into the matter “from the time the same is handed over to the federal investigation agency”. BJP’s National Information and Technology Department in-charge Amit Malviya said the SIT had been constituted “to cover up the crime” and protect Trinamool leaders involved in the killings in Rampurhat Block,around 200 km from Kolkata. “Grateful to the Calcutta HC for ordering CBI probe in the Rampurhat massacre. (West Bengal Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee’s admin and SIT constituted by the WB Govt inspired no confidence whatsoever. It seemed more like a means to cover up the crime and protect TMC leaders involved in the ghastly killings,’ tweeted Malviya, who is also the BJP co-in charge in the state. CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member and eminent advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya found fault with Banerjee ordering the state agencies to arrest Trinamool Congress Rampurhat block, President Anarul Sheikh in connection with the incident, saying it was a “dangerous” trend. “The state agencies are incapable of working independently as the Chief Minister has been seen naming the accused persons and directing the police to arrest such and such person. The Chief Minister was said to have directed the agency to fabricate the case,” Bhattacharya said and added “his is very dangerous” for a democratic society. He also suggested that the Chief Minister and TMC’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal should also be made party to the case. Bhattacharya said the CBI probe should also be above any influence to unravel the truth. State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has already advocated the imposition of Article 355 in West Bengal after the massacre in which six women were killed and ten houses torched, expressed his happiness with the HC decision but demanded a court-monitored CBI probe. The High Court took note of the allegations against SIT head ADGP Gyanwant Singh. The carnage apparently was in retaliation to the killing of TMC leader and Barsal Panchayat Deputy Chief Bhadu Sheikh,who died in a bomb attack at a tea stall near his residence on Monday evening.
