Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly’s upcoming budget session is set to commence on February 17, with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati delivering the inaugural address.
According to assembly sources, this will be the sixth session of the 17th Odisha Assembly and is scheduled to continue until April 8. The budget session will take place in two phases, spanning a total of 28 working days.
The session is expected to feature extensive discussions on the state’s financial direction, development plans, and political issues.
Following the Governor’s address on February 17, the house will debate a vote of thanks to the speech, which will continue until February 19. On February 20, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the finance portfolio, will present the budget for the financial year 2026-27 in the assembly.
This budget is considered significant not only from an economic standpoint but also politically.
Assembly sources further revealed that the Appropriation Bill based on the 2026-27 budget will be introduced on March 31, followed by detailed discussions.
Experts suggest that with upcoming elections for panchayats and urban local bodies, this budget holds special importance. It is expected that the state government may announce several new and popular schemes aimed at appealing to voters in both rural and urban areas.
The budget session is likely to witness intense debates between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and opposition parties such as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress.
The opposition is preparing to challenge the government on various issues, including alleged mismanagement in paddy procurement, rising crimes against women in the state, alleged fraud concerning Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, and controversies related to the installation of smart electricity meters.
Notably, the Odisha Assembly recently witnessed a historic moment when President Draupadi Murmu addressed the house during the previous session of the 17th assembly on November 27, 2025.
