Chennai, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The nomination process for the by-elections in Tamil Nadu‘s Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly constituencies has officially begun, starting Wednesday. Election machinery is now active in Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts. Candidates have until September 16 to submit their nominations.
Officials have organized the collection and verification of documents at election offices, while security and monitoring measures have been tightened across both constituencies. In Dharapuram, which is a reserved seat, an election office has been set up at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Returning Officer Felix Raj is overseeing the preparations. Nomination forms are readily available at the office, which is equipped with surveillance cameras to ensure security.
These by-elections became necessary following the resignation of AIADMK MLA Sathiyabama, who won the seat in the assembly elections held four months ago. The Election Commission subsequently declared the seat vacant and announced the by-election. To monitor violations and the movement of unaccounted cash, nine flying squads have been established in Dharapuram. Authorities have warned that any amount exceeding ₹50,000 transported without valid documentation may be seized.
In Madurantakam, the Model Code of Conduct is now in effect. The Chengalpattu district administration has opened an election control room at the collectorate to receive complaints and ensure prompt action. This constituency features 285 polling stations and a total of 213,689 voters, including 104,886 men, 108,738 women, and 65 transgender voters. To oversee electoral activities, nine flying squads and nine static surveillance teams have been deployed.
District Collector Veerappan held a meeting with representatives from recognized political parties, including TVK, DMK, AIADMK, BJP, and Congress, to discuss rules and arrangements. Following the announcement of the election schedule, officials have begun removing political wall advertisements, posters, and banners from government property and public spaces.
Candidates and parties are required to obtain prior permission for campaign meetings, loudspeakers, vehicle rallies, and temporary party offices through the Election Commission’s online application system. Officials emphasized that enforcement teams will closely monitor compliance with expenditure rules and the code of conduct during the nomination and campaigning periods. Voters are encouraged to report any violations immediately.
