New Delhi, May 14: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, met with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday. During their discussion, Gadkari assured the Chief Minister that long-pending highway and flyover projects in the state would be completed soon.
The infrastructure projects under review include those in Makhhu, Adamapur, and Bhawani Garh.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Mann also advocated for the declaration of strategic roads, such as the Fazilka-Firozpur corridor near the international border, as national highways. He emphasized the need to expedite projects that have been stalled for years.
Mann mentioned that the central government has assured approval for the construction of a four-lane road from Bhawani Garh to Kotshamir. Additionally, agreements have been reached for the expansion of the Barnala-Bajakhana and Malerkotla-Barnala corridors. This is seen as a significant step for Punjab’s connectivity, economic activities, and security.
The Chief Minister highlighted that Minister Gadkari praised the Punjab government’s ‘Road Safety Force,’ which was initiated to save lives in road accidents and ensure safe traffic.
Mann also raised concerns about the delayed completion of the Walla Flyover project in Amritsar, urging for its swift resolution. He noted that this project was assigned by the NHAI and was supposed to be completed by September 15, 2023. Despite multiple extensions, the work remains unfinished, with current progress at about 76%. The new deadline has been set for April 30, 2026.
He stated that this corridor connects Amritsar Airport to Sri Harmandir Sahib and experiences heavy traffic, including VIP movement. The delay in the project has resulted in congestion, security risks, and significant inconvenience for the public.
In another matter, he raised the need for view cutters to be installed at the Hussainar Chowk flyover on the Bathinda-Malout Road, which falls under NHAI jurisdiction.
