Ninad Kamat Discusses the Challenges of Portraying Addiction in Candy and the Pizza Girl

Mumbai, April 28: The Indian digital platform is often filled with thrillers and romances, but the dark comedy film ‘Candy and the Pizza Girl’ is currently streaming on OTT. Set against the backdrop of Mumbai, this film tells the story of quirky characters and the unusual events that unfold around them.

Actor Ninad Kamat elaborated on the film’s unique genre in a recent conversation. He noted that there is always room for experimentation with dark comedy in Hindi cinema. Through this film, director Akhil has attempted to create something distinctly different. The entire team realized during production that they were crafting something unique and impactful.

While discussing his character, Kamat shared an intriguing anecdote. He explained, “Balancing personal life and a film character was somewhat challenging. The biggest discomfort for me was that my character is an addict, whereas I am strongly against such things in real life. As an artist, stepping into that mindset was difficult, but it was necessary to portray the social class that immerses itself in parties every night, believing themselves to be gods.”

Kamat referenced the cult classic film ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro,’ stating it is one of his favorites. He remarked, “Just as Satish Kaushik and other actors wove comedy around a corpse in that film, a similar film may never be made again. ‘Candy and the Pizza Girl’ attempts to carry forward that genre’s legacy with a fresh perspective and new taste.”

He further clarified that his opinion is not solely because he is part of the film, but also as an audience member, he found director Akhil’s vision to be very honest and clear.

Kamat added, “Often on OTT platforms, viewers start watching a web series with family, only to feel embarrassed due to sudden profanity. However, our team was clear from the beginning that this is an ‘adult’ film.”
