NIA Summons TMC Leaders in Judicial Misconduct Case in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 3: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to interrogate several leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding a case of misconduct involving judicial officials in Malda, West Bengal. The agency has issued summons to multiple leaders, directing them to appear at the Kaliachak police station.

Officials reported on Sunday that the NIA has called local TMC leaders for questioning related to an incident of misconduct involving judicial officials engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Mothabari, Malda district.

Among those summoned is Sabina Yasmin’s election agent from Sujapur, who is also the supervisor of the Forest and Land Department of the Malda Zilla Parishad. Additionally, other TMC leaders and workers from the region have received notices. Abdul Rahman, Yasmin’s election agent, received his notice late Saturday night. Furthermore, Mohammad Sariul, the TMC president of Kaliachak Block-1, has also been instructed to report to the police station by evening.

Judicial officials appointed by the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court were finalizing names on the list under SIR when they were reportedly surrounded and held ‘hostage’ for nearly nine hours in Mothabari last month. Allegations of misconduct against them have also surfaced. It is claimed that a group of individuals whose names were removed from the SIR list protested against the officials.

The Election Commission assigned the investigation of this incident to the NIA following an order from the Supreme Court. Prior to this, the state police’s CID arrested one of the main accused, Mofakkarul Islam, who is alleged to be one of the key conspirators behind the protest.

So far, a total of 52 individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident. Several accused are currently in NIA custody, while others remain in judicial custody. Local sources indicate that TMC leaders from the area have been summoned for further questioning regarding the events of that day.
