Guwahati, April 25: Officials reported on Saturday that the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is intensifying efforts to enhance train operation safety and reliability through continuous monitoring and systematic infrastructure upgrades.
Kapilanjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, stated that adopting modern, technologically advanced systems remains a primary focus to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trains across the zone.
During March 2026, NFR implemented several significant initiatives in the areas of signaling and safety.
According to officials, clamp-type locking ‘thick web switch point machines’ have been installed at five stations in the Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, and Lumding divisions of the zone.
The CPRO mentioned that ‘system integrity testing’ has been conducted at seven stations in the Katihar (Bihar), Alipurduar (West Bengal), and Tinsukia (Assam) divisions. A comprehensive ‘system integrity testing’ campaign covering 32 level crossing gates across all divisions has also been completed.
Additionally, to enhance operational safety, several level crossing gates in the Lumding and Rangiya divisions have been interlocked.
In strengthening signaling infrastructure, ten ‘sliding boom’ barriers have been activated at various level crossing gates in the Katihar, Lumding, and Rangiya divisions.
Sharma noted that automatic ‘fire detection and alarm systems’ have been activated at two stations in the Tinsukia division, which includes upgrades to advanced ‘aspiration-type’ systems at two locations.
Moreover, ‘electric lifting barriers’ have replaced older mechanical systems at two level crossing gates in the Tinsukia division, improving safety at rail-road intersections.
To ensure reliability and proper insulation performance, ‘signaling cable meggering’ has been conducted at 11 stations and 12 level crossing gates.
To enhance the reliability of safety equipment, 1,258 signaling batteries of various capacities have been replaced across all divisions.
The replacement of 246 ‘glued joints’ and 92 ‘integrated-type’ signal LEDs has also been completed throughout the zone.
Furthermore, to improve system safety and stability, enhanced ‘earthing’ arrangements have been provided at the Gauripur station in the Alipurduar division.
These infrastructure upgrades play a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of trains, improving reliability, and enhancing overall railway capacity.
The CPRO stated that NFR is committed to providing passengers with a safe, more efficient, and timely travel experience by continuously monitoring and strengthening its infrastructure.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), headquartered in Maligaon near Guwahati, operates in the northeastern states, as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of northern Bihar.
