New Zealand Faces Uphill Battle Against India in T20 World Cup Final, Says Dale Steyn

New Delhi, March 7: The T20 World Cup 2026 final is set to take place this Sunday between India and New Zealand. Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn believes that the Indian team is exceptionally strong in their home conditions, making it incredibly challenging for New Zealand to secure a victory.

In a conversation on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel, Steyn expressed that the Indian team thrives in their own environment. He stated, “It is very difficult to defeat them. If New Zealand wants to win, they will need a miracle.”

Steyn acknowledged that New Zealand is a solid team playing excellent cricket. However, he feels that overcoming India will be a tough task.

In a light-hearted manner, Steyn remarked that if New Zealand fails to win against India, he might label them as ‘chokers,’ a tag often associated with South Africa. New Zealand has reached seven ICC finals but has only won twice. Therefore, if they cannot clinch the title against India, the ‘chokers’ label might be fitting.

AB de Villiers also reminisced about the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final, where South Africa lost to New Zealand, expressing regret over that defeat. He noted that only South Africa could have beaten Australia on their home turf in the final.

Historically, knockout matches have been a challenge for both New Zealand and South Africa. This time, New Zealand eliminated South Africa in the semi-finals, continuing their struggle in knockout stages. They have only won two ICC trophies: the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship, both against India.

New Zealand has an impressive record against India in T20 World Cup history, having won all three matches played so far. All eyes will be on New Zealand’s performance in the final.
