Aghayeva was taken into custody early Thursday after federal agents entered a residential building on Columbia University’s Manhattan campus. The university stated that immigration officials had provided false information to gain entry for the arrest. Acting President Claire Shipman noted that it appears federal agents entered the building under the pretense of searching for a “missing person.” The university is currently gathering more information.
Shipman further stated that if law enforcement agents wish to enter non-public areas of the university, they should contact the public safety department first. The public safety department will coordinate the university’s response with the attorney general’s office, advising agents not to enter or accept any warrants or summons.
In a statement to the Columbia Daily Spectator, the Department of Homeland Security indicated that Aghayeva’s visa was canceled in 2016 due to her absence from classes. The statement clarified that the building manager and her roommate allowed officials to enter the apartment. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed there are no pending appeals or applications regarding her case.
