New Delhi, May 3: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of a horrific incident involving the rape and murder of a minor girl in Pune, Maharashtra. This heinous crime has sparked deep anguish and outrage, raising serious concerns about the safety of girls.
The commission condemned this inhumane act, stating that such crimes are a grave violation of children’s rights and cast doubt on the safety mechanisms within society. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has urged the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to take immediate action, ensuring oversight of the investigation and demanding severe punishment for the perpetrators. Additionally, she emphasized the need for prompt assistance and compensation for the victim’s family, timely filing of charges under the POCSO Act, and swift hearings in fast-track courts. Ensuring the safety and justice for every girl must be our top priority.
The incident occurred on May 1 in Nasrapur, where the minor girl had come to visit her grandmother during the summer holidays. Around 3:30 PM, a 65-year-old man lured the girl away from her home under the pretext of showing her a calf.
He took her to a nearby cow shelter, where he sexually assaulted her. According to police sources, to silence the victim, he murdered her and concealed her body beneath a pile of dung.
When the girl went missing, her family raised an alarm. Local CCTV footage revealed the suspect leading her towards the cow shelter. Later, the girl’s body was recovered from the crime scene.
The nature of the murder has created tension in the area, prompting villagers to surround the police and demand immediate action. Police sources confirmed that the suspect was arrested by the Pune rural police and presented in court, which remanded him to police custody until May 7.
The Maharashtra government has taken this matter seriously. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the act, labeling it a “stain on humanity.” He instructed the Pune rural police to conduct a thorough investigation and announced that the trial would be expedited in a fast-track court.
