New Delhi, May 19: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has taken serious note of a complaint regarding the use of offensive language during the census process in Punjab. This complaint was submitted to NCSC Chairman Kishore Makwana by Hardeep Singh Gill, Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis.
According to the complaint, the use of derogatory terms related to the Valmiki community during the census has sparked outrage among its members. Recognizing the sensitivity of the issue, the commission acted promptly and issued notices to the relevant departments.
The NCSC has directed the Director of the Census Operations Directorate, Punjab, and the Principal Secretary of the Department of Social Justice, Empowerment, and Minorities of the Punjab government to submit a report on the actions taken within 15 days.
Chairman Kishore Makwana emphasized that protecting the dignity, rights, and respect of Scheduled Castes is the commission’s top priority. He stated that further necessary actions would be taken based on the reports submitted by the concerned officials.
Earlier in March, the NCSC expressed concerns over the implementation of welfare schemes for Scheduled Castes in Punjab during a two-day review meeting with senior government officials in Chandigarh.
Makwana had mentioned the need for “immediate corrective measures” for the status of Scheduled Castes in Punjab. The commission highlighted several issues, including irregularities in scholarship distribution, the non-implementation of central welfare schemes, increasing dropout rates among SC students, and shortcomings in the atrocity prevention mechanism.
The commission also pointed out lapses in handling cases registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. According to the NCSC, many complaints were reportedly dismissed by police stations without filing FIRs.
